Why earn a degree in aviation?
Flight training is just the start! For aspiring professional pilots, competition is fierce. The airlines often have thousands of applicants for a hundred or so available slots; corporate and fractional operators are swamped with resumes. A college education is an important asset for both newly trained pilots with high-flying dreams as well as professional pilots seeking to upgrade to the airlines. Not having a degree often disqualifies applicants for a chance at the best jobs.
What can I study?
Mountain State University offers three aviation related degrees, all available through distance learning:
Associate of Science in Aviation
Bachelor of Science in Aviation
Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership
Bachelor of Science in Airline Transport Professional Pilot Operations
Many of the courses required for the associate and bachelor’s degree in aviation are offered through MSU’s independent study program, which provides a high degree of flexibility for distance learners. General education requirements and additional coursework can be completed on most MSU campuses or through other learning options.
Why choose MSU?
Receive college credit for FAA certificates and ratings
MSU offers college credit for those hard-earned FAA certificates and ratings. A student can earn up to 45 credit hours based on the FAA certificates. Here are some sample credit hours available:
Private Pilot

Instrument Rating

Commercial Pilot
11 |
Multi-Engine Rating

Flight Instructor

Transfer credit from other schools
Mountain State University accepts credit from other regionally accredited colleges and universities, so there is no need to repeat courses completed at other schools - and MSU does not charge to transfer credit. Plus, unlike other institutions, MSU does not charge for the credits earned through FAA certificates and ratings. This can save Mountain State University aviation students not thousands of dollars, but tens of thousands of dollars!
A Brief Message from Dave Robbins, Director of Aviation
Is it a cliché to say ‘the sky’s the limit’? I think not! Our students and graduates work in all areas of aviation, from flight instructors to airline pilots, flying everything from military helicopters to corporate jets. But a college education does more than improve your chances at a good job. All those hours of study teach you about the people we fly with and the world we fly over. A college education is more than training; it is a broad base of learning that helps you succeed in life. So don’t just live to fly, live to learn - and learn to thrive!
