Forensic Investigation

What can I study in forensic investigation at MSU?

Through Mountain State University's Bachelor of Science in forensic investigation, you will acquire specialized skills in investigating such crimes as homicide, sex offenses, child and elder abuse, cyber crimes, pathology, drug cases, and arson. Our forensic investigation program focuses on the role of the field investigator in recognizing, documenting, and harvesting evidence at crime scenes, and on how this evidence is evaluated in a courtroom setting.

Coursework emphasizes the historical evolution of investigative techniques, terminology, and the use of forensic methods to solve crimes. You will be taught scientific methodology, divergent problem solving strategies, critical thinking, and ethics in a hands-on, problem-based setting. In turn, you will develop basic investigative skills that prepare you for entrance into a career as an investigator and/or crime scene technician.

What sets MSU apart is the fact that we feature an Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) lab, much like the one used by the FBI; a forensic photo lab; and a cold case room where you will work with law enforcement personnel on real criminal cases. You will receive hands-on experience by working with state and local investigations and in MSU's unique crime scene house.

Our Forensics Investigation Association (FIA) student group enables students to attend forensic-related conferences.
