    Medical Coding and Billing

Whether a student is already employed in a medical billing office, or simply wants to expand their employment options by studying the field, the medical coding and billing certificate program at Mountain State University will prepare the student for national certification in medical coding and billing.

Why MSU for Medical Coding and Billing?

Students study anatomy and physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, and information technology, in addition to learning medical terminology, ICD-9, CPT, and HCPCS codes.

The medical coding and billing program is offered in its entirety both traditionally (in-seat on the Beckley campus only) and online. Many courses in the program are also offered through independent study (correspondence).

Students in MSU's medical coding and billing program complete 35 credit hours over a full calendar year (including summer sessions). The program accepts new online and traditional students for fall, spring, and summer semesters, and maintains a rolling admissions policy. Qualified applicants are accepted
until the upcoming class is filled, then are placed on a waiting list for the next class.

The program can be completed in conjunction with an associate or bachelor's degree in a related field or as a stand-alone program.

    Career Opportunities

Physician's offices, medical and surgical clinics, and hospitals have discovered the risk-management need to hire certified medical coders and billers, and the demand for employee certification is now higher than ever. The one-year certificate program will provide students with the knowledge and hands-on skills that will give them a competitive edge over their peers.
