Charles H. Polk School of Leadership and Professional Development

Doctor of Executive Leadership

Admission requirements

Students need to have completed a master's or first professional degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution and have professional leadership experience.

If you have not completed a master's or first professional degree, you can start your graduate work with a master's degree from Mountain State University. Our Master of Science in Strategic Leadership provides a solid foundation of leadership learning that is extended and deepened in our Doctor of Executive Leadership program.

To apply for program admission, candidates must submit the following items:

  • DEL admission application. Click here to download a printable PDF of the application and recommendation forms.
  • Application fee. Check or money order for the nonrefundable $75 application fee, payable to Mountain State University.
  • Discussion paper (1,500 to 2,500 words— approximately six to ten pages of double-spaced 12-point type). A paper that connects your personal experience in leadership to an element of leadership theory. The paper can be based on your overall development as a leader or on a significant professional experience involving an ethical question, the consideration or implementation of change, or another leadership issue. It should also address your reasons for seeking admission to the D.E.L. program and how the program fits within your academic and professional interests and goals. The admissions committee gives this element particular scrutiny and weight in evaluating applications.
  • Resume. A complete current resume that includes your education and work history, honors and awards, publications and presentations, research experience (if any), and participation in professional and community organizations.
  • Official transcripts for all colleges and universities you have attended, sent directly from the issuing institution to Mountain State University, School of Leadership and Professional Development, 410 Neville Street, Beckley WV 25801. A transcript evaluation may be required if your degree is from a college or university outside the United States; contact the D.E.L. program coordinator for additional information.
  • Two confidential recommendations from supervisors, colleagues, or professors, submitted on the D.E.L. applicant recommendation form. Those providing your recommendations must send the form directly to the address provided on the form.
