AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The responsibilities of the volunteer include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  1. Exposure to patrol and traffic operations
  2. Ride-alongs with Uniform Patrol Unit
  3. Exposure to the Criminal Investigations Unit
  4. Exposure to Community Services and Training Units
  5. Maintain a log of activities any time they are on duty.

Upon acceptance, the intern will be required to schedule contact hours mandated by the intern's college degree requirements. As examples, this may be:

    • At least 12 hours per week during regular semester sessions of 15 weeks.
    • Sixteen hours per week during the Internship Program of a 10week duration.
    • Both the intern and supervisor can adjust hours of work.

The criteria for participation in the Student Internship Program is as follows:

  1. The student enrolled in a four year degree program will have a Junior or Senior standing at an accredited four year university or college. The student enrolled in a two year degree program will have completed two thirds (2/3) of required credits toward a degree at an accredited two year university or college.
  2. The student must be currently enrolled, through his or her respective college or university, in an internship or independent study class.
  3. The student must currently have a 2.5 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  4. The student must, prior to acceptance into the Internship Program, submit the following
    • A cover letter
    • A completed application form,
    • A Volunteer/Intern Agreement
    • Waiver Form
    • Ride-Along Release
    • Emergency Data Sheet
    • Personal History Statement
    • A professional resume
    • At least one letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor or professor
    • An official transcript of all college work
    • Reference

Driving record and a local criminal background check will then be conducted.

  1. The chief for approval will review the student’s application.  If approved, the student applicant will be provided written notification of the time and date to report to the Volunteer coordinator.
  2. The student must, upon completion of the Internship Program, take part in:
    • An exit interview
    • Complete an evaluation of the Internship Program, prior to the exit internview.

ORIENTATION/TRAINING:

During the intern orientation, they will receive the following:

  1. Rules and regulations the intern must follow.
  2. A copy of the 10 code
  3. A copy of current organizational structure
  4. Syllabus of working schedule (Timetable to be determined by the volunteer coordinator)
  5. Explanation of areas of the building, and a map designating areas accessible to the intern.

Upon the intern's arrival, one photograph will be taken. The photograph and a brief memo will be posted on the bulletin board in the squad room to introduce the new intern. At the end of the internship, the photograph will be placed into the intern's file.

The intern will be issued an Identification card that will be worn at all times while in contact with police personnel. This would include working within Police Headquarters, attending any ride-along sessions, or while touring any police facility.  Upon completion of your internship, the identification card will be returned the Coordinator of Volunteers

The Intern’s supervision will be determined by his/her assignment.

  • A final evaluation report of the intern's performance will be completed by the training officer.
  • Employee comments may be solicited for the evaluation.
  • Original evaluations will be maintained in the intern’s file
    • Copies of evaluations will be sent to the school and intern.
    • The Division for a period of five years will retain the intern files.
  • Violation of any rules may be cause for termination from the program.

On the job training will expose volunteers to topics such as human relations and communication, courtesy, and assorted policies and procedures required for the successful operation of this program.

DUTY UNIFORMS:

Student Intern Volunteers shall wear appropriate attire for an office environment

The respective supervisor shall determine what clothing is appropriate for interns on occasions when certain job assignments mandate variation from normal business-type clothing.

*NOTE: Weapons, including any impact weapons and/or chemical dispensers are prohibited.

DUTY HOURS

  1. Duty hours are to be determined by volunteer assignment
  2. Volunteers may work no more than eight (8) hours per day.
  3. There is no minimum requirement per day or week for volunteer participation.

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers in the states of West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia. The park consists of approximately 3,600 acres with 65 park structures.  Within the park are also located the Harpers Ferry Interpretive Design Center and Mather Employee Development Center. The park is currently involved in a continuing rehabilitation and restoration program. The park's interpretive services educate the public on five cultural/natural resource topics. The Interpretation and Cultural Resource Management program is continually under evaluation to meet ongoing complex challenges to park resources and issues. The park's history and nationally significant themes include:  Industrial history/ arms manufacturing, John Brown's 1859 Raid/1861-1865 Civil War military and civilian history, African American history/Storer College/Niagara Movement, transportation development, Natural history and the developing American experience

STIPEND: $100.00 per week for a 40 hour

HOUSING: Dorm housing provided at no cost.

This is a volunteer position not to exceed 600 hours or one full semester of internship work. Work schedule will be full-time during the semester. Schedule will be Monday through Friday, but subject to occasional changes in the work schedule that might include working weekends or evenings.

Incumbent is required to wear the NPS Volunteer uniform shirt or historic period costume. The work often requires prolonged periods of standing, sitting, or walking. The incumbent must frequently traverse uneven terrain, which can involve walks/hikes with considerable change in elevation. Lifting moderately heavy objects may be required. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Periods of inconvenience can be experienced when working in historical costume. 

Duties:

This internship is in the Office of Education with the Division of Interpretation and Cultural Resource Management.  Primary duties are to prepare, develop and deliver education programs that interpret the park's significant history stories to students K – 12th grade;  utilize current methods, learning theories, and national education standards and curriculum guidelines in program deliver and conduct research to insure accurate and relevant programming. Responsibilities  include:  development and presentation of any on- and off-site curriculum based education activities and tours as needed; development and fabrication of pre, on-site  and post visit instructional materials; assistance with on-site logistical arrangements; assistance with planning and development of program curriculum offerings; design and application of evaluation tools, grant writing and reporting, staffing of 19th century historical furnished and modern exhibits;  assistance with special school events and activities; maintenance of education materials and prop collection; and presenting informal historic and resource research and interpretation.

Qualifications Required:  

To qualify, applicants must have completed or be currently enrolled in an 4 year or above course of college study leading to a bachelor’s or master’s degree with major study in education, American history/studies, government/public policy, science, museum education, or public speaking/communications or a related degree that included or was supplemented by at least 15 semester hours in education, American history studies, science, or public speaking/communications. Education must have been obtained from an accredited college or university.  Candidates interested in the field of non-traditional teaching and public history are encouraged to apply.

National Association of College and University Food Services

The National Association of College & University Food Services (NACUFS) is the trade association for foodservice professionals at more than 600 institutions of higher education in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and abroad.

They are looking for bright, enthusiastic, resourceful and motivated college students to participate in their summer foodservice management internship. For the foodservice management internship, various colleges and universities volunteer to host internship applicants at their institutions to help give student more exposure to the benefits of working in college and university food service operations.

The objective of the summer management internship is to attract students to meet the needs for professionally trained staff in today’s campus dining services. They will introduce these aspiring professionals to the challenging opportunities available in college and university food service, a profession that is experiencing tremendous growth and exciting change. The internship will provide on-the-job experiences that will prepare students for responsible positions in college and university food service management after graduation. In addition it will provide a unique overview while working in a real life setting, seeing firsthand how classroom theory meets the real life work world. This will provide great insight to the intern’s first professional job interview after graduation.

In addition to all that they will learn interns will be paid a minimum of $1600 net take home for eight weeks. Housing and meals will also be provided. This will make the internship more feasible for students who other wise could not afford to attend an internship. In addition interns are encouraged to discuss the possibility of getting credit for this eight week experience with their advisors at their home college or university prior to the start of the internship.

About us:

Theatre West Virginia was founded in 1955 as the West Virginia Historical Drama Association by concerned citizens from the Raleigh County region who desired to present West Virginia’s unique culture to as wide an audience as possible.

Each each summer we produce spectacular entertainment under the stars. For 50 years, we’ve produced two of the world’s most captivating outdoor drama performances, Honey in the Rock and Hatfields & McCoys, on the stage at the Cliffside Amphitheatre at Grandview. This is the only stage where these two shows can be seen! We also produce two Broadway performances every year. 2010’s performances will include Footloose and Willy Wonka. Along with our summer outdoor dramas, TWV offers educational touring shows to schools in West Virginia.

2010 is our 50th season and we are implementing many great changes and additions to our company. One of those changes will be a pilot internship program.

American Institutes for Research (AIR)

Overview:

The American Institutes for Research (AIR) is one of the largest behavioral and social science research organizations in the world. We are currently seeking candidates for an internship position located in Rockville, MD.


Responsibilities:

AIR and the Child, Adolescent and Family Branch (CAFB) established the System of Care Internship to

(1) further the CAFB’s mission to promote and ensure that the mental health needs of children and their families are addressed through a community-based system of care;

(2) support CAFB efforts to develop products and activities that are culturally and linguistically competent; and

(3) increase the availability of a competent workforce with first-hand knowledge of how cultural and linguistic experience can inform mental health services and supports.

The internship will provide experience in children’s mental health; knowledge about systems of care; and understanding about the CAFB’s functioning including policy development, evaluation and other activities related to systems of care.

The selected applicant will work closely with AIR and CAFB staff on a number of efforts:


• Supporting the CAFB’s cultural and linguistic competence and elimination of mental health disparities initiatives.

• Coordinating youth involvement activities.

• Developing meetings materials and planning meetings, as well as participating in meeting activities on topics related to children’s mental health.

• Developing products related to children’s mental health such as fact sheets, briefing papers, white papers and tip sheets.


The CAFB will require interns to typically work a minimum of 20 hours weekly, with hours not to exceed 35 hours weekly.

Office of Aviation Safety | Spring, Summer and Fall Terms

The NTSB Office of Aviation Safety offers internship opportunities available throughout the year for undergraduate and graduate aviation students with appropriate credentials. These internships are located at the NTSB regional offices in Ashburn, Virginia and Miami, Florida. Internships are offered on both a paid and unpaid basis under the provisions of the Student Temporary Employee Program or the Student Volunteer Program, and last approximately three to four months. Students gain hands-on experience directly related to aviation safety, and allow students an opportunity to explore aviation career options as well as develop personal and professional skills.

Salary: Volunteer positions are unpaid. Paid positions earn between $10.00 and $20.00 per hour

Description of Work:
Students work under the direction of an NTSB air safety investigator, and provide assistance to them in the conduct of selected accident/incident investigations. The students provide support during the on-scene phase of investigations, as well as in the office. Typical duties include conducting research, writing briefing papers and preliminary accident reports, and preparing materials for inclusion in the public docket.

Work Schedule:
Part-time or full-time positions are available. Flexible work schedules can be approved on a case-by-case basis. A minimum of twenty (20) hours of work per week is required, with a maximum of forty (40) hours per week. Internships generally last between three and four months, and may coincide with the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters of most four-year Universities. Arrangements for specific starting and ending dates depend on the needs of the Agency and the schedule of the students. Students are responsible for housing and transportation, and must be able to commute to the selected work location.

Qualification Requirements:

U.S. Citizenship is required.

  • Students must meet minimum age requirements as specified by federal, state, or local laws.
  • Must be enrolled in a degree or certificate program at an accredited college or university on at lease a half-time basis.
  • A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.8 reflected on a current transcript.
  • Must possess skills in technical writing. Completion of a college-level technical writing course or other similar work experience is helpful.
  • Must possess at lease private pilot certificate and at least fifty (50) hours of pilot-in-command (PIC) flight experience. A commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating and two hundred (200) hours of PIC experience are desirable. Helicopter, flight instructor, or aircraft mechanic experience is also desirable.
  • Must have completed at least:
    • For the Student Volunteer (unpaid) position, one year (24 credit hours) of college-level course work.
    • For the Investigative Assistant (paid) position, a bachelor’s degree or at least one previous term as a Student Volunteer.

  2. An application. The following documents are acceptable: A resume, form OF-612 (Optional Application for Federal Employment), or other available application format. 4 FORENSIC Internship Opportunities

Lee Forensics, LLC, located in Fishers, Indiana is currently offering potential interns to actively participate in Fire Cause Investigation scene examinations which include the following investigative steps:

  1. Exterior scene examinations; including the process of photographing a scene, diagramming, and identification of burn patterns and identification of evidence.
  2. Interior scene examinations; including the process of hazard identification, burn pattern identification, fire origin and cause determination, scene reconstruction and elimination of ignition sources other than “Arson”, identification of failed appliances and careless acts.
  3. Interns will have the opportunity to gain knowledge in electrical, fuel gas and mechanical knowledge, as one of our lead investigators is an Electrical and Fuel Gas Specialist as well as a Forensic Investigator.
  4. Interns will participate in all aspects of the investigation process except for photographing the scene, extraction of evidence and maintaining the chain of custody, which is the responsibility of the lead investigator.
  5. Interns will participate in all general operations of a business including marketing and association meetings.
  6. Additionally interns may attend seminars lead by famous leaders in forensics such as Dr. Henry Lee or Dr. John Dehaan.

A base pay rate of $10.00 per hour is allotted for “time on the scene” and $5.00 per hour is allotted “if you drive your vehicle to and from a scene.”  Pay for work outside of a scene is not included.  These rates are subject to change and a flat rate may be instituted at Lee Forensics, LLC discretion.

Typically our busy season starts around August and runs through April.  We are offering two periods for interns: September – December and January – April, two interns per period. 

Interns should be physically fit as physical labor is involved.  Additionally, interns may be drug tested.
