NETL offers two pathways for U.S. citizens who are students looking to gain work experience that relates to their educational programs and career goals.

Student Career Experience Program (SCEP)
SCEP is a formally structured "work-study" program that provides work experience directly related to the student's educational program and career goals. Work must relate to the student's academic program or major, and participation in the program requires an agreement by both NETL and the student's school on the nature of the work assignment, the work schedule, and the evaluation methods.

Student positions can range from GS-4 (undergraduate) through GS-11 (graduate level) in primarily engineering, scientific, and technical occupations/disciplines. Occasionally, we fill positions in other occupations/disciplines.

Students are hired at the GS level commensurate with their experience and education and are eligible for promotion, leave, and benefits. No financial need requirements exist.

For more information, contact SCEP Coordinator Donna Isaac at (412) 386-5822.

Minority Mentoring and Internship Program (MMIP)

The MMIP was established in 2001 to offer women and minority students intern employment opportunities, meeting the needs of NETL and providing work that is directly related to the students' educational programs and career goals. These internships provide hands-on research opportunities at a state-of-the-art national laboratory, depending on the students' interests and experience. The program primarily focuses on students majoring in chemistry, engineering, geology, materials science and mathematics.

NETL offers opportunities for student interns to work under the guidance of an NETL technical expert as government employees in positions that can range from GS-4 (undergraduate) through GS-11 (graduate level) in primarily engineering, scientific, and technical occupations/disciplines. Occasionally, we fill positions in other occupations/disciplines. NETL makes appointments at any time of the year, and there is no limit on the number of hours a student can work.

Interns may work full-time or part-time throughout the year as their educational commitment allows. With their advisor's approval, students can use their research at NETL as the basis for their thesis work.

Students who have completed their education and worked at least 640 hours at NETL are eligible for non-competitive placement as permanent full-time employees, if such positions are available.

Benefits to students include:

  • Generous annual and sick leave
  • Paid holidays
  • Alternative work schedules
  • Life and health insurance
  • Retirement plan
  • Thrift Savings Plan (equivalent to a 401K)
  • Family friendly work programs

Council of the Southern Mountains
Mentoring Children of Prisoners Program
Mentors Needed!

Why a mentor?
From time to time, everyone has needed a mentor. We have all needed someone to help us discover our strengths, our unique gifts and our purpose. Mentors listen. They teach, they play and they spend time just being there for someone. Mentors help us get the skills we need to succeed. Who needs them? We all do.

Mentors through the Council of Southern Mountains
The Council of Southern Mountains recently received grant money to assist in linking mentors with young people ages 4 to 18 who have a parent involved with the federal or state correctional system. The parents may be incarcerated, on probation, reporting to a day report center or otherwise involved with the correctional system.

What will I do as a mentor?
• Listen
• Participate in fun activities
• Provide encouragement
• Provide examples
• Help with school work
• Network

We ask those volunteering to be mentors to commit at least one year to the life of a young person. This is an excellent opportunity for Master’s level field research, or undergraduate internships for undergrads.

The Workforce Recruitment Program for College Students with Disabilities

What Is the Workforce Recruitment Program?

The Workforce Recruitment Program for College Students with Disabilities (WRP) is a resource to connect public and private sector employers nationwide with highly motivated postsecondary students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workforce. Employers seek to fill both temporary and permanent positions in a variety of fields.

Myths, stereotypes, and misconceptions about people with disabilities often stand in the way when people with disabilities look for jobs, resulting in a high rate of unemployment. Statistics show that people with disabilities from minority backgrounds encounter even greater difficulty in obtaining work. The WRP aims to eliminate this workplace discrimination one student, one employer, and one job at a time.

Who Is Eligible to Participate in the WRP?

An applicant for the program must
* have a substantial disability
* be a United States citizen
* be enrolled in an accredited institution of higher learning on a substantially full-time basis (unless the severity of the disability precludes the student from taking a substantially full-time load) to seek a degree OR
* be enrolled in such an institution as a degree-seeking student taking less than a substantially full-time load in the enrollment period immediately prior to graduation OR
* have graduated from such an institution within the past year

What Does the WRP Offer to Colleges and Universities?

The WRP provides a unique opportunity for colleges and universities to
* tap into a system that has been successfully placing students with disabilities in summer and permanent jobs in the public and private sectors for several years, at no cost to the school, the student, or the employer
* bring together the resources of their disability services and career services offices to promote more effectively the job seeking skills and career readiness of their students with disabilities
* provide their students with disabilities a chance to grow personally and professionally through participation in this nationwide program

What Does the WRP Offer to Eligible Students?

The WRP is an excellent way for students with disabilities in all fields of study to
* market their abilities to a wide variety of potential employers across the United States
* sharpen their interviewing skills during a required one-on-one meeting with a WRP recruiter
* gain valuable skills, experience, and contacts on the job
* prove that people with disabilities can be excellent employees

How Does the Program Work?

The WRP operates on the following timeline:
* By mid-September, the schedule of recruitment visits to schools is confirmed.
* From mid-January through mid-February, recruitment visits, which include 30-minute personal interviews with individual students, are conducted.
* By late March, a data base composed of student information gathered during recruitment visits is made available to employers in the public and private sectors.
* Once the data base is released, interested employers make direct contact with students about temporary and permanent job offers. The data base is active for one year.

The WRP is co-sponsored by the Office of Disability Employment Policy and the Department of Defense, with support from other federal agencies.
