Grade Point Average (GPA)

Academic standing at Mountain State University is based on grades received, the numeric value of the grades, and the credit value of the courses.

Grade	Quality Points (per hour)	Grade Definitions
A	4	Superior--given only to students for exceptional performance.
B	3	Good--given for performance distinctly above the average in quality.
C	2	Average--given for performance of average quality.
D	1	Lowest passing grade--given for performance of poor quality.
F	0	Failure to meet minimum competencies.
P	0	Pass--credit only, no quality points.
W	0	Withdrawal within the period designated by the University--no grade/no credit.
NG	0	No Grade reported
AFS	0	Academic Fresh Start
I	0	Incomplete. Indicates that the course has not been completed for some unavoidable reason that is acceptable to the instructor. Converts to a letter grade when work is completed or to F if work is not completed by the end of the following semester. Students must contact the instructor for assignments.
AU	0	Audit

The grade-point average is computed on all work for which a student registered, with the exceptions of courses with grades of P, W, I, AFS, NG, and AU each of which carries no grade value.

Computation Of Grade-Point Average (GPA)

Overall and semester grade-point averages are calculated as follows:

Step A. Multiply the course credit hours by the quality point value to obtain total quality points for each course.
Step B. Add the total quality points for all courses.
Step C. Add the total credit hours for all courses attempted, with the exception of P, W, I, NG, AFS, and AU.
Step D. Divide the total quality points earned by the total credit hours; i.e., Step B is divided by Step C.

Grade Reports

Although faculty members report both midterm and final grades to Student Services, you will receive a midterm grade only for classes in which your midterm grade is D or F. Student Services issues final grades to all students following each semester. Grades for independent study courses and cohort programs are issued following each course. Your final grades are available on Cougar Web. To receive a final grade report by mail, submit a request to the registrar that includes your full name, student ID number, and signature. You must submit a new request each semester. Federal privacy laws prohibit the release of grade information by telephone.
