Graduation Requirements
Undergraduate Requirements
To be eligible for graduation from Mountain State University, you must meet the following University requirements:
- Earn at least 128 hours for a bachelor's degree, 64 hours for an associate degree, or 32 hours for a certificate.
- Earn at least 30 hours at MSU for a bachelor’s degree, 18 hours for an associate degree, or 6 hours for a certificate.
- Fulfill the general education requirements at your degree level for either the bachelor's or associate degree. Graduates earning a certificate are exempt from this requirement.
- Complete English 101 and English 102 with a grade of C or better.
- Have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0.
- Fulfill all requirements of your program of study.
- Fulfill all financial obligations to the University.
- Submit a graduation application and pay the application fee by the appropriate deadline.
- Complete all core requirements within your program of study with a grade of C or better. (See program listings or check with the Registrar’s office for details).

- Have an approved candidacy form or grad report on file.
- Maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0
- Meet any additional program requirements for degree candidates.
- Fulfill all financial obligations to the University.
- Submit a graduation application and pay the application fee by the appropriate deadline.

Before official transcripts and/or diplomas can be released, the following requirements must be satisfied:
Exit Loan Counseling
If you have received a Federal student loan anytime during your college attendance, Federal regulations require that you complete Loan Exit Counseling before you graduate. To meet this requirement, please follow the steps below:
- Access the following site: http://www.aessuccess.org
- Click on "Entrance and Exit Counseling."
- Scroll down to "Online Student Loan Counseling" and click on Federal Student Loan Exit Counseling. Click on "Continue" twice.
- Find West Virginia in the drop down box, and then find Mountain State University in the next drop down box.
- Read the questions and take the quiz.
- You will then be required to complete an electronic Exit Counseling Form, which will be sent to MSU
Please be advised that Federal regulations require schools to withhold the release of transcripts and diplomas until students complete the Exit Counseling.
Payment for Student Account Balance
In addition to curriculum requirements, every student must fulfill all financial obligations to Mountain State University before transcripts and/or diplomas will be released. Please contact Mountain State University's Service Center at 1-866-FOR-MSU1, option 2 or 304-929-INFO to verify the status of your account and make payment.
Official Transcripts
All students must have a complete permanent file prior to the release of transcripts and/or diplomas. This includes official transcripts from all institutions attended.
