Financial Aid Probation Appeals

Students in undergraduate, graduate and post graduate programs that are placed on Financial Aid Probation after being on Financial Aid Warning may appeal.

The status of Financial Aid Probation is given to students who are not meeting Standards of Academic Progress. Students are not eligible to receive financial aid with this status without filing an appeal. There are two steps in the MSU appeal process. In the first step an appeal is made to the MSU Financial Aid Director. Students that are denied the appeal with the Financial Aid Director will have their appeal forwarded to the second phase with the Appeals Committee. Voting members are the Registrar, the Assistant Registrar and Director of Advising. Another Student Services Director can substitute if one of the above are not available. The Director and Assistant Director of Financial Aid serve as non-voting, ex-officio members of the committee. Members may be changed or added as needed. The committee meetings are held biweekly.

The student may file an appeal using our online Financial Aid Probation Appeal Form within 20 days of receipt of the notification of being placed on Financial Aid Probation.

The following are circumstances and elements of the SAP policy that are considered when evaluating a Financial Aid Probation appeal:

  • Serious illness of the student or immediate family member requiring the student's assistance
  • Death of a close relative
  • Loss of employment
  • Divorce
  • Severe emotional distress
  • Other hardships

The Financial Aid Probation Appeals Committee may request from the student documentation to support his or her appeal. The request must be made in writing and the student will have 30 days to respond.

Effective July 1, 2011 students that are approved for an appeal will have an academic plan developed that will ensure the student can reach academic progress. The academic plan will be completed on a Progress Plan form and will allow an academic advisor to set semester by semester expectations that, with the use of appropriate resources, are reasonable given the student's performance to date. At the end of each semester that plan will be reviewed. Students not meeting the plan will have their eligibility for aid terminated. Students will be notified within 5 days after the committee meets of their decision.
