Looking to the Future: The MSU Foundation

Mountain State University has attained an impressive level of success in recent years, and we aspire to an even higher level of achievement. The quality of an institution of higher education is seldom determined by baseline funding – tuition and fees. It is rather vested in the size of the endowment, the number of faculty chairs and professorships, privately supported program enhancements, and other kids of support.

Our students deserve the best educational opportunities we can offer.  We have an obligation to provide a student-centered learning environment, complete with the resources our students need for academic success.

Toward this end, Mountain State University Foundation, Inc. was established in 2005 as an independent, non-profit corporation to aid, strengthen and further the work and services of the University.  The Foundation exists solely for the purpose of securing and carefully managing private funds in support of academic programs, student scholarships, faculty development, and other priorities of MSU.  To accomplish its purpose, the Foundation seeks to actively involve alumni, friends, and the community in the life of the institution through philanthropy.

The goals of the foundation are three-fold:

  • The cultivate awareness and appreciation for Mountain State University,
  • To create opportunity for involvement in the mission of the institution, and
  • To increase revenue through private support to further strengthen the institution and improve the quality of our students’ learning experiences.

A board of directors is being built to carry out of the work of the foundation.  Board meetings will be held four times a year, with committees meeting as necessary to fulfill their mandates.  The foundation is seeking to add board members who can bring a diversity of perspective, as well as the expertise and resources to support the organization’s growth and purpose.

The Foundation will actively seek private funding from individuals, corporations, government agencies, and grant-making foundations.  The board of directors and staff will work with donors to determine and carry out the specific purposes to be supported with funds received by the Foundation.  Donors may contribute cash, real estate, stocks and bonds, or other property, which may be given outright or through trusts or bequests.

As a private, not-for-profit university, MSU receives no public funding to support its operations. Therefore, the support of our donors is critical to maintaining the high quality and wide range of educational services at the University. Your support is also a strong endorsement of MSU and its mission for other foundations and funding sources.

The Mountain State Scholarship Circle is an endowment fund that provides scholarships to deserving students. Gifts to the Scholarship Circle are permanently invested in the endowment fund and the interest is awarded annually in the form of student scholarships.

A gift of $10,000 or more can be designated to establish a named scholarship or endowed fund. This lasting legacy can carry your own name, your family name, or the name of someone you wish to honor or memorialize.

Additionally, you can designate your contribution to support a particular program or service at MSU, whether it’s an academic department, athletics, the Academy at Mountain State University, the library, technology, campus beautification, or virtually any other area.

Consider some of the many ways you can be a part of our growth and continuing success.
