The Basics of Preventing the Spread of the Flu

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing (or a shirt sleeve or elbow if no tissue is available)
  • Stay home if you feel sick

What is the Swine Flu?

Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza. Swine flu does not normally infect humans. However, human infections do occur, usually after exposure to pigs.

Swine flu is thought to be spread mainly person-to-person, through coughing or sneezing of infected people.

Swine flu in humans can vary in severity from mild to severe. It may cause chronic medical conditions to worsen.

What are the symptoms?
As of now this disease is presenting similar symptoms as "normal" flu.

  • fever greater than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • body aches
  • headache
  • chills
  • some people report vomiting and diarrhea

Know What to Do About the Flu

  • Cover your cough
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • If you have a fever, stay home for at least 24 hrs after that fever has ended
  • Get a vaccine when it becomes available
