Frequently Asked Questions
Who may use the MSU Library?
The Library is open to MSU students, faculty, and staff. The public is also welcome to use the Library and its resources as long as they adhere to its policies. The public may not directly check out materials. However, individuals can make arrangements through the Raleigh County Public Library for an interlibrary loan of our holdings. Community members may use lab computers only for researching MSU's online resources, not personal use such as e-mail.
For Distance Education students, a Library card application is AVAILABLE HERE. To receive all necessary information for distance learning library services, e-mail Sue Phillips at suephil@mountainstate.edu and include your complete name, address, and student ID number.
Children are welcome in the library as long as an adult guardian accompanies and suprvises them. The Library staff cannot be depended upon to attend to the safety of children who are in the Library. Therefore, UNATTENDED children are NOT allowed in the Library. Parents whose children are loud or disruptive may be asked to leave. This is primarily due to legal concerns and issues.
Academy students are the exception to this rule. They will be required to show their Academy IDs and the school will be called to confirm the students’ permission to be in the Library.

How do I check out materials?
You must have your updated MSU ID card with you. Circulating Books and videos can be checked out for four weeks. You may have a total of 15 items checked out in your name. Reference books, master videos, reserve items, and periodicals can be used only in the library. Overdue fines are five cents a day, with a three-day grace period.

What if I need something the library doesn't own?
We can try to obtain it for you from another library through our Interlibrary Loan service. Unless the lending library charges a fee, Interlibrary Loan is free. Please remember to allow ample time for processing your request, usually two to three weeks. Interlibrary loan request forms are AVAILABLE HERE.
