Electronic Database Instructions
The best way to learn how to use online databases is by actually going in and using them. Contact Sue Phillips, the Academic Resource Librarian, at suephil@mountainstate.edu for the required usernames and passwords.
Serials Solutions
Serials Solutions indexes the journal holdings of the MSU Library. Search this to see if the library owns a specific periodical title in print or if it is available on one of the periodical databases.
Step 1: To search by title, enter the title, keywords of the title, or the ISSN in the search box and select the corresponding search type from the pull down menu. (For example, if searching by keyword, choose “Title contains all words.”) Click search.
Step 2: To browse by subject, choose a general subject area from the pull-down menu and click search. A list of narrower subjects will result with the number of titles in that subject area in parentheses. Clicking on the link for a narrower subject will pull up the list of titles for that subject.
Step 3: Once you have your search results you can see which titles we own and in what format. Here is a sample result:
American craft (0194-8008)
from 02/01/1991 to 06/01/2006 in ProQuest Research Library
from 02/01/1991 to 01/01/1996 in Mountain State University Library Microform Holdings
That means that the title is available through ProQuest from February 1991 to June 2006 in ProQuest and on microfiche in the library from February 1991 to January 1996.
Step 4: If the title is available electronically, click on the hyperlink to access it. If the title is available in print or microform, you can either come to the library and use it or email us libraryrequests@mountainstate.edu to request an article.
