School of Business and Technology

Quick Links

The School of Business and Technology offers programs of study in business and technical fields at the certificate, associate, and bachelor’s levels. Each program prepares students for challenging positions in business and industry, education, and government organizations; provides them with the managerial and technical skills to identify and respond to complex challenges; and prepares them to pursue continued study within their field.

The school actively supports scholarly investigation, experiential learning, and service to public and private organizations. Faculty members and students are involved in consulting, training, research, community service, and other educational and professional activities.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Most School of Business and Technology programs are open to any student who meets the University’s general admission requirements. Some programs do have more restrictive admissions policies; see the program listing for more information.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
You must earn a grade of C or better in each business core and business concentration course listed in your program of study to progress satisfactorily toward graduation.

INTERNSHIP/PRACTICUM
During senior year, qualified bachelor’s degree students have an opportunity to work directly in their field of concentration. A practicum experience helps to develop
students’ confidence as well as establish valuable credentials for future employment.

Upon completion of the internship/practicum experience, students earn up to 15 semester hours of credit. In extenuating circumstances, additional coursework can be approved in place of, or as part of, a practicum experience. Students earning more than one degree must complete a separate practicum experience for each.

CAPSTONE
During their senior year, qualified bachelor’s degree students in accounting and business administration must complete the Business Strategy course for their degree program. This capstone course provides an integrative approach that focuses on formulating and implementing strategy within the context of a particular organization and industry. The capstone uses such techniques as computer simulation, case analysis, and discussion to aid in developing critical decision-making capabilities. It is also designed to ease the transition from an academic setting to the private sector through electronic portfolio development in the form of cover letter and resume writing, work samples, honors, interviewing techniques, and other related activities.

Students in computer science, culinary arts, information technology, and legal studies complete a capstone project involving development of an electronic personal portfolio.

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM
A cooperative education program gives students the opportunity to apply their formal classroom studies by working for public and private institutions in the region. The University has one such agreement with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, and other agreements are being developed.

Students accepted into the program either work part-time in conjunction with their academic studies or alternate each semester between full-time study and full-time work. The program is designed to apply and test classroom experiences in practical employment settings, helping students to evaluate their career interests and employment opportunities.
