The University works to ensure that students pursuing distance learning options receive the same degree of support and access to resources as campus-based students. The graduate coordinator provides individual assistance to distance learners, from application and initial enrollment through graduation. The graduate coordinator works closely with academic program directors and can provide services in person or by mail, e-mail, or telephone.
In general, the policies and information provided in this catalog apply equally to distance learners and campus-based students, although some processes differ. Contact the School of Graduate Studies if you have special needs or questions that are not answered here.
Admission
When you inquire about admission, the graduate coordinator sends any application materials you will require, refers you to the appropriate on-line resources, and provides assistance throughout the admission process.
Bookstore
In addition to the campus-based bookstore, the University provides bookstore services to off-campus learners. Books and other learning resources as well as insignia items can be ordered on line at ookstore.mountainstate.edu or by mail, e mail, or phone. The bookstore accepts cash, checks, Discover, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and authorized student account charges.
Financial Aid and Payment of Tuition
Financial aid and other methods of payment are available to eligible off-campus learners. The School of Graduate Studies will provide general information on payment options and financial aid. Staff members in Student Services and Financial Aid are available to assist with questions regarding payment plans, veteran and military benefits, employer tuition assistance, and third-party billing. Information and applications are also available at the University's Virtual Financial Aid Office, http://mountainstate.vfao.com.
Grades
You are notified of your grades by mail when they are posted to your transcript. You should discuss any questions regarding your final grade with the instructor of record for the course. The University's policy for academic appeals is available on line at www.mountainstate.edu/legal/judicial.htm or from the School of Graduate Studies.
Graduation
Off-campus learners are subject to the same candidacy requirements as students on campus before they are eligible for graduation. (See Degree Candidacy under Graduate Study at MSU.) Graduation application forms are available from either the School of Graduate Studies or Student Services.
Identification Cards
Off-campus students who require a student ID can obtain one by contacting the School of Graduate Studies.
Library and Learning Resources
In addition to the resources on campus, which are open to all students, Mountain State University provides library and learning resources specifically for off-campus learners, including the services of an academic resources librarian who specializes in distance learning resources.
When you register as an off-campus learner, you will receive a packet of information on distance education library resources, including contact information for the academic resources librarian and other library staff members; a library card application; step-by-step instructions for using University databases and checking out library materials; and strategies for conducting on-line research.
Registration
Off-campus learners work closely with their program director to determine course sequencing and academic advising, and with School of Graduate Studies staff members to complete registration processes.
