MEDICAL CODING AND BILLING (Certificate)
Patsy H. Haslam School of Health Sciences

The one-year certificate program in medical coding and billing is open to those who currently work in medical coding and billing positions but who are not certified, as well as those who are expanding their employment options by beginning their studies in the field. It can also serve as a refresher course for certified coders and billers who wish to apply for advanced credentials.

The program can help prepare you for national certification in medical coding and billing. (Educational requirements vary depending on your background the level of certification you’re seeking.) It is open to students in the medical assisting program or other associate or bachelor’s degree programs, as well as those who wish to earn only the certificate without enrolling in a degree program.

Application and Admission
The program accepts new students for the spring semester. Students take 27 credit hours over a full calendar year (including summer sessions). Acceptance to the University does not guarantee admission into the program.

The program maintains a rolling admissions policy. Applications are accepted until the class for the upcoming year is filled. After that point, qualifying applicants are placed on a waiting list for the next class. A new class begins each summer.

Program Requirements
Progress in the program requires that you maintain a grade of C in all courses you attempt. The minimum passing score for all MAST courses is 70 percent.
