Technology FAQ
Mountain
State University is now offering two-year and four-year online degrees
in the areas of information technology and computer science. These
degrees are offered through the School of Business and Technology and
each curriculum offers a firm foundation in the fundamentals of
business.
Both
programs help prepare students for exciting and rewarding careers through
the
study of design, development, implementation, support or management of
computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and
computer hardware. Much of the early coursework is common to all IT and CS
degrees, because both fields require a strong background in computer
sciences/architecture, database management, and basic programming. The IT
programs offer additional coursework in web design, e-commerce, and network
security. The CS programs include more advanced coursework in mathematics
and programming languages.
How long are the courses?
Each course is eight weeks long.
What is the time commitment?
Most courses are three semester hours. To complete a three-hour course in
eight weeks, you will need to devote at least six hours a week per course.
Depending on your background and the demands of the individual course, this
time investment may be much higher.
What type of computer system do I need?
Currently the minimum system requirements for the IT/CS degree programs are
a Windows XP operating system with 256 MB of memory and a 1 gig processor.
Will I need to purchase software?
Yes, in addition to textbooks, some of your courses will require specific
software to be purchased and installed. This software will benefit you in
your career after graduation; it’s an investment in the tools of your trade.
Student discounts are available on most software titles.
Will I need to be online at a particular time
each week?
This depends upon the particular course and instructor, but most courses do
not have a required chat time.
What will I do each week?
In
addition to reading from textbooks and other resources, you will be
completing hands-on activities, discussing key concepts with your instructor
and peers, and interfacing with digital media such as video tutorials.
Is there a face-to-face lab requirement?
No, these courses are offered entirely online. But both program areas will
help to prepare you for several certification programs that can really
jumpstart your career. You will learn more about these certifications and
how they can be achieved when you begin the program. Testing for most
certifications is not available online but can be completed in a city near
you. |
