FSCI 101 – Firefighting Skills I (3 semester hours)
This course is derived from the Firefighter I course as approved by RESA, the Fire Service Extension Division of the West Virginia University Extension Service, and the West Virginia State Fire Commission. This course may include additional classroom and practical instruction appropriate for a 45 contact hour (3 semester hour) course. A Firefighter I certificate can be submitted as evidence that the student has satisfied the key learning elements associated with this course. By agreement, ACE awards the WV Firefighter I certificate 3 semester hours of equivalent credit.
FSCI 102 – Firefighting Skills II (3 semester hours)
This course is derived from the Firefighter II course as approved by RESA, the Fire Service Extension division of the West Virginia University Extension Service, and the West Virginia State Fire Commission. This course may include additional classroom and practical instruction appropriate for a 45 contact hour (3 semester hour) course. A Firefighter II certificate can be submitted as evidence that the student has satisfied the key learning elements associated with this course. By agreement, ACE awards the WV Firefighter II certificate 3 semester hours of equivalent credit.
FSCI 200 – First Aid and CPR for Firefighters (3 semester hours)
This course is derived from the Basic First Aid, CPR and Automated Defibrillator courses taught and approved by RESA, the Fire Service Extension division of the West Virginia University Extension Service, and the West Virginia State Fire Commission. This course may include additional classroom and practical instruction appropriate for a 45 contact hour (3 semester hour) course. The Basic First Aid, CPR and Automated Defibrillator certificates can be submitted as evidence that the student has satisfied the key learning elements associated with this course. The Basic First Aid certificate is equivalent to 16 contact hours, or 1.07 semester hours. The Basic CPR certificate is equivalent to 16 contact hours, or 1.07 semester hours. The Automated Defibrillator certificate is equivalent to 16 contact hours, or 1.07 semester hours. Any deficiency between the credit hours associated with the course and the certificates can be satisfied by additional coursework and/or the academic credit associated with other appropriate training that has been approved by MSU and/or RESA, the Fire Service Extension division of the West Virginia University Extension Service, and the West Virginia State Fire Commission. All three certificates must be submitted before credit will be granted.
FSCI 230 - Hazardous Materials for Firefighters (3 semester hours)
This course is derived from the ERT Basic Concepts, IAFF Hazardous Material Operations, and Decontamination courses taught and approved by RESA, the Fire Service Extension division of the West Virginia University Extension Service, and the West Virginia State Fire Commission. This course may include additional classroom and practical instruction appropriate for a 45 contact hour (3 semester hour) course.
FSCI 240 – Vehicle Extrication (3 semester hours)
This course is derived from the IFSTA Principles of Extrication course taught and approved by RESA, the Fire Service Extension division of the West Virginia University Extension Service, and the West Virginia State Fire Commission. This course may include additional classroom and practical instruction appropriate for a 45 contact hour (3 semester hour) course.
FSCI 250 – Driver Pump Operator (3 semester hours)
This course is derived from the WVU Driver Operator-Pumper course taught and approved by RESA, the Fire Service Extension division of the West Virginia University Extension Service, and the West Virginia State Fire Commission. This course may include additional classroom and practical instruction appropriate for a 45 contact hour (3 semester hour) course.

This course is derived from the Arson Detection for First Responders course taught and approved by RESA, the Fire Service Extension division of the West Virginia University Extension Service, and the West Virginia State Fire Commission. This course may include additional classroom and practical instruction appropriate for a 45 contact hour (3 semester hour) course.
FSCI 270 – Firefighter Incident Command Skills (3 semester hours)
This course is derived from the Incident Command System, Incident Command for Structural Collapse and Incident Safety Officer courses taught and approved by RESA, the Fire Service Extension division of the West Virginia University Extension Service, and the West Virginia State Fire Commission. The Incident Command System, Incident Command for Structural Collapse and Incident Safety Officer Certificates can be submitted as evidence that the student has satisfied the key learning elements associated with this course. Each of these certificates is equivalent to 16 contact hours, or 1 semester hour of course credit. All three certificates must be submitted for review before equivalent course credit will be granted.
FSCI 280 – Firefighter Leadership (3 semester hours)
This course is derived from the Leadership I, Leadership II, and Leadership III courses taught and approved by RESA, the Fire Service Extension division of the West Virginia University Extension Service, and the West Virginia State Fire Commission. The Leadership I, Leadership II, and Leadership III certificates can be submitted as evidence that the student has satisfied the key learning elements associated with this course. Each of these certificates is equivalent to 16 contact hours, or 1 semester hour of course credit. All three certificates must be submitted for review before equivalent course credit will be granted.
FSCI 290 – Tactical Operations (3 semester hours)
This course is derived from the MCTO Preparations, MCTO Decision Making and MCTO Tactics courses taught and approved by RESA, the Fire Service Extension division of the West Virginia University Extension Service, and the West Virginia State Fire Commission. The MCTO Preparations, MCTO Decision Making and MCTO Tactics certificates can be submitted as evidence that the student has satisfied the key learning elements associated with this course. Each of these certificates is equivalent to 16 contact hours, or 1 semester hour of course credit. All three certificates must be submitted for review before equivalent course credit will be granted.
Fire Science (FSCI) electives.
(12 total semester hours, 4 - 3 semester hour courses)
Fire Science electives account for a minimum of 12 semester hours of the Fire Science degree requirements. This component of the Fire Science degree can be satisfied by completing upper-level Fire Science courses offered by Mountain State University, or through Prior Learning Assessment based upon the submission of evidence (training certifications) sanctioned by RESA, the Fire Service Extension division of the West Virginia University Extension Service, the West Virginia State Fire Commission, the National Fire Academy and FEMA.
[Note: The textbooks utilized in this program will be those recognized by the State of West Virginia. The Curriculum will be sanctioned by the West Virginia Fire Extension Service. As long as MSU’s Fire Science program is taught by certified instructors who teach the approved curriculum using the approved textbooks, the students will be eligible to receive state, or national certifications upon completion of their MSU Fire Science courses.]
