Why choose a career in Mining/Environmenal Engineering?
Many students who choose to study mining engineering have a family background of coal mining, but others seek the career because of interests in the environment, geology, chemistry or physics. Mining engineers are concerned with the environmentally responsible extraction and processing of mineral resources to meet global demand, while ensuring the safety of the land and those who live on it.

Why choose MSU?
Mountain State University is located in an area steeped in the mining industry. From mining coal to salt, and a variety of other minerals in between, West Virginia has long been known for its wealth of underground minerals and fuels. While opportunities for mining engineers exist around the world, our mountainous terrain provides students with an excellent hands-on opportunity to solve the challenges of water flow, rock mass, and soil mechanics.

What can I study?
The A.A.S. Degree in Mining Engineering includes the study of chemistry, physics, and math, giving students a strong foundation upon which to build a specialized engineering career.  Students will take specialized courses in environmental science, geology, hydraulics and hydrology, environmental geotechnics, and mining engineering. Hands-on field work provides students with real-world experience.

What are my career options?
Mining engineering provides students with a variety of career options in the mining industry and its related fields. Careers in mine supervision, earth excavation planning, infrastructure development, environmental engineering, mine safety and risk management, mine design consulting, mining supply marketing, and even government mine safety consulting are open to students with an education in mining engineering.
