Appalachian Visions Prepares for Eighth Season
October 09, 2002

Mountain State University's acclaimed Appalachian Visions series, now preparing for its eighth season, brings the best in regional scholarship and arts to southern West Virginia.

Series programming ranges from studies in the history, culture, and religious expression of the southern highlands to celebrations of the region's music, literature, and traditional arts—all free and open to the public, in a relaxed atmosphere that encourages discussion and connection among disciplines and ideas.

Past events include lectures and readings by writers Wilma Dykeman, Nikki Giovanni, Sharyn McCrumb, and Mary Lee Settle; discussions with cultural scholars Loyal Jones and Howard Dorgan; a performance lecture by old-time fiddler and retired Smithsonian Folk Life Center director Alan Jabbour; a screening of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Stranger With a Camera; and musical performances ranging from Native American drumming and shape-note singing to bluegrass and traditional ballads.

The series is made possible with the support of the West Virginia Humanities Council and other donors. For more information on the upcoming series or to become a supporter, contact Donna Spencer at appyvisions@mountainstate.edu.
