Organizational leadership student Darlene Brown of Beckley was awarded the Bembalkar World Citizen Merit Scholarship at a ceremony held on the Beckley campus of Mountain State University March 7. Brown, who returned to school 29 years after completing an associate degree, earned the highest score from a panel of judges on the basis of a written essay and participation in a panel discussion on "Access to Education: The Ethics of Entry." Brown lives in Beckley with her husband, David J. Brown. Their two children, Andy and Andrea, are both college students and expect to graduate at about the same time as their mother. The Bembalkar World Citizen Merit Scholarship Program is designed to enhance the understanding of our neighbors in a diverse world and to promote the free and civil exchange of ideas and views in an open and constructive manner. It provides an annual award of $1,000 through a competition open to all Mountain State University students. Dr. and Mrs. Shrikant Bembalkar are providing the scholarship in honor of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Bembalkar. Other students who participated in the final phase of competition were Lawrence Craft, Timothy Foust, James Greene, Dianna Ojwang'a, and Douglas Ré.
