We would like to congratulate the class of 2005! We wish you success!
Over 900 students will graduate from Mountain State University this spring, and many will attend the Commencement Ceremony on May 14th at 2pm at the Raleigh County Armory Civic Center. Graduating seniors include students from West Virginia and other states nationwide. Countries from all over the world are also represented, reflecting the growing number of international students who attend MSU.
Reverend Daniel Johnson, United Methodist Temple in Beckley, will offer the invocation and MSU President Dr. Charles Polk will welcome the graduates and their families. “This 70th Commencement Ceremony represents the largest graduating class in MSU history,” says Dr. Polk. “It’s the logical outcome of the phenomenal growth the University is experiencing.”
Other speakers include Dr. Arnold Simonse, representing the MSU faculty, and Max Beard, who will extend congratulations from the Alumni Association. An Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching will also be presented by Dr. Polk.
The valedictorian this year is Alfreda Tincher, from Meadow Bridge, WV. Alfreda is graduating with two Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degrees, one with a concentration in Marketing and Management, and one in Accounting with a CPA emphasis. She previously received two Associate of Science in Business Administration degrees.
Local musician Yvonne Seay will lead the graduates in singing the MSU Alma Mater. The recessional will be provided by bagpiper Don Dransfield
Dr. Polk says it’s a day for celebrating, but also for saying goodbye. “It is a bittersweet time. We’re marking the achievement of our graduates and celebrating their success, but it’s also a day when they we watch them leave MSU. Our part in their education is finished, and now our job is to wish them well on a new journey.”
