Leading across Boundaries and Building Coalitions

Leaders operates on the edge of and across boundaries, often in areas in which they have no direct authority. Leaders recognize the system within which their own organization operates and work to make boundaries permeable.

  • Builds collaborative relationships – Reaches across conventional boundaries to bring people together with the reliable information to work in constructive ways on shared concerns; creates trust and agreements in extended relationships.
  • Practices political savvy and use of power – Acknowledges politics as a fact of organizational life; exercises power based on formal and informal authority to direct attention, control flow of information, and frame issues; identifies and engages persons who influence others.
  • Fosters networks – Participates in social and professional networks; proactively pursues others with information, resources, or competency which can expand one’s knowledge; encourages exchanges.
  • Lives globalization – Develops strategies and processes which recognize a "flat" earth; capitalizes on opportunities for rethinking workflow across geographical and geopolitical boundaries.
