Leadership is a dynamic process within a web of relationships which requires understanding others and engaging them for collective good.

Frames challenges and actions to enable others to act; influences and mobilizes stakeholders to action; fosters a sense of excitement and personal significance.
  • Develops others’ capacity – Models effective behaviors; promotes experience-based learning with coaching and mentoring; creates opportunities for changing attitudes and behaviors; builds capability on individuals’ strengths.
  • Embraces diversity and bridges differences – Recognizes and capitalizes on transformative opportunities in conflict; mediates by seeing and acting in the best interest of the whole; negotiates agreements between competing interests; leverages diversity; establishes respect for different perspectives.
  • Builds connections and teams – Seeks to establish personal and professional bonds and enhance relationships; creates opportunities for collective thinking and learning; brings people together to address shared concerns and interests; develops a broader shared knowledge base through dialogue.
  • Allocates decision making – Chooses between consultative, autocratic, and consensual approaches to decision-making based on the type of issues, resilience of the social system, severity of issues, and time frame for taking action.
  • Senses social realities – Reads and adaptively responds to social environments to maximize leadership impact; socially constructs alternative realities; manages stressors for productive performance.
  • Communicates skillfully – Creates compelling narratives about self and context; exercises conscious communication with appreciation for the message, context and people; chooses communication style and channel to work for them; times communication to personal and organizational rhythms.
