What do I need to be a successful social worker?
Discover the personal qualities needed in this field.
Good listening and communication skills, a desire to help others, and respect for people and their differences are all important qualities for a social worker. Social workers are often patient and empathetic in their listening skills. Their desire to help others inspires persistence in meeting needs and perseverance to continue to work toward a goal, even when faced with adversity. They are respectful of those they are serving, despite differences in age, race, social standing, or values. While these traits are not necessarily innate, they can be cultivated. The social workers you meet during your field experiences will model these attributes for you in their interactions with clients. By observing and emulating them, you will see these characteristics develop in your own life and work.
