College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

What is CLEP?
CLEP is the College-Level Examination Program that provides all students the opportunity to demonstrate college-level achievement through a program of exams in 34 undergraduate college courses. The exams are computer-based in nature and students can take exams in a variety of undergraduate subjects.

Why take CLEP exams?
Students take CLEP exams to save time and money, move right into advanced courses, graduate on time, and satisfy a proficiency requirement. Many students save time and money by taking CLEP exams to gain college credit for what they already know whether it was learned by Independent Study, advanced high school courses, professional development, or occupation skills. Taking CLEP exams can provide students the opportunity to satisfy prerequisite courses and move into the advance courses.

What are the policies & procedures for CLEP?
Mountain State University has a set of policies and procedures for registering for CLEP exams.

  • Students must complete a registration form and submit the $15 nonrefundable scheduling fee to take an exam.
  • The fee for a CLEP exam is $70 payable the day of the scheduled exam.

See the complete list of policies and procedures.

How is it scored and what is a passing score?
CLEP exams are computer-based and therefore, are immediately scored upon completion of the exam with the exception of those exams that require essays. Any exam that requires the scoring of an essay takes several weeks for a score report to be sent through the postal service.

Mountain State University recognizes the recommended scores set by the American Council on Education (ACE). A list of exams, required scores for receiving CLEP credit, and MSU equivalent courses are provided.

Any student that does not meet the minimum required score for passing a CLEP exam must wait 6 months before registration to take the exam again.

How do I prepare for a CLEP exam?
There are several resources to prepare for a CLEP exam:

1. CLEP Sampler — The CLEP Sampler is a free demo to practice taking a CLEP exam on the computer. The student will become familiar with the testing software as well as instructions and question formats. This free demo can be downloaded from the CLEP website at www.collegeboard.com/clep.

2. Information for Candidates Brochures — CLEP provides free brochures that can be downloaded as PDF files to learn more about taking the exams. The brochures contain information on registration and instructions about CLEP. The free brochures can be downloaded from the CLEP website at www.collegeboard.com/clep.

3. CLEP Official Study Guide, 2006, 18th Edition — The official study guide provided by CLEP is the only comprehensive source of information about the CLEP exams. It contains sample questions and answers for all exams, information on getting credit for CLEP, exam-taking strategies, and a tutorial on CD-ROM to become familiar with the software and format of the exams. The official study guide can be purchased directly at www.collegeboard.com/clep. Xerox copies of the sample questions and answers for the 34 CLEP exams are available upon request in the Testing Center. The 2006 18th Edition CLEP Official Study Guide (ISBN #0-87447-771-9) is available in the Testing Center. Contact the Testing Center at (304) 929-1333 for information.

4. CLEP Individual Subject Guides — If a student plans on taking only 1 or 2 tests then the CLEP individual subject guides would be most beneficial. The subject guides are taken from the CLEP Official Study Guide, which is a comprehensive resource. The content from both resources is the same and individual subject guides are less expensive. Individual subject guides can be purchased directly at www.collegeboard.com/clep.

How do I get my scores after taking an exam?
You will receive an unofficial score transcript immediately upon completing the exam with the exception of those with essay portions. Prior to beginning the exam, the student will enter an official score recipient that will receive the official score transcript within 2-3 weeks from the test date.
