Summer 2012 Independent Study

As part of our efforts to ensure the quality of the academic experience at Mountain State University, we are restructuring our independent study option. The restructure includes two principal changes:

  • Beginning summer 2012, IS classes will be taught in 16-week semesters that correspond with the traditional fall, spring, and summer terms at MSU.
  • All IS classes will be taught online using the Blackboard learning management system (the same as the former IS web-enhanced designation). Classes will no longer be offered in the paper-based/e-mail format with a syllabus on Cougar Web.

Under the new structure, the schedules for registration, adding and dropping classes, and refunds will be the same for IS and traditional classes. IS classes will be structured on a 16-week semester, with assignment deadlines and regular contact with the instructor. Enrollment will be limited to the same three periods a year as traditional classes, and there will no longer be the option of a one-month extension for completing an IS class.

This restructured independent study option will be launched on a limited basis for the summer 2012 term, May 7 through August 24. Summer 2012 IS registration will begin April 23 and run through May 11.

A list of available IS courses, along with other information, will be posted here as it becomes available.
