Withdrawals and Refunds

Once the add-drop period for your period of study is over, schedule changes are made only through the withdrawal process, and a refund schedule goes into effect. If you withdraw from a class, a grade of W will appear on your transcript and you are responsible for the charges for the course. While you can withdraw from an individual class, such withdrawals are not eligible for a refund; the refund schedule applies only to students who withdraw completely from the University.

The add-drop period and refund schedule for traditional classes are available in each semester's schedule of classes, available on the MSU website or from the Registration or Student Accounts offices on any campus. Other formats (including cohort and online study) have separate academic calendars. If you register for a course and do not attend, the Registrar's Office will be notified and you may be dropped from your classes. If you stop attending before completion of the course, it is your responsibility to officially withdraw on or before the last day to do so.

Balance Limits

You must have a balance of $200 or less to register for summer 2012 courses. If you are receiving financial aid, you must also complete the "Registering with a balance" form.

You can also preregister for fall 2012 with a balance of $200 or less, but you will be required to have a zero balance by the end of summer term to maintain your preregistration. If you have a remaining balance at the end of the summer term, will be dropped from fall preregistration.

Your account balance must be at zero to register for fall classes. If a balance remains because your financial aid has not been posted, you will be allowed to register after verification with Student Accounts.Students whose tuition is reimbursed by their employer, however, must still have a zero balance at the end of summer to register.
